Planning on adding a new family member soon? Please take the time necessary to plan and prepare for this special addition to your lives.
This is a long term commitment. These wonderful balls of fluff will be an important part of your life for fifteen or more years.
The time you spend now before they come will make a big difference in how well you are prepared and how successful this relationship will be.
Please read the following tips to help you in your search.
- Read up on this breed and know as much as you can before contacting Breeders.
- Read up on training and find out what training classes are in your area.
- Go to a Rare Breed Dog Show. Meet the Breed and the Breeders there. See the temperament, talk and watch.
- Look for a Breeder who is a Code of Ethics Breeder of a Club. This means that they have made a commitment to adhere to a number of rules that benefit the breed and protect you.
- Talk to many breeders before deciding on one. Ask lots of questions of each one.
- Don’t ever buy a puppy from an internet site or a Pet Shop. These are Puppy Mill Puppies! Doesn’t matter what they tell you. THEY ARE!
- Make sure your Breeder will allow you to come for a home visit. Where the dogs reside. Not at a park or a parking lot or the mall. You should see how the facilities appear and the condition of the dogs in the home.
- If the Breeder is not in your area, see if someone you know can visit or get referrals from past puppy families.
- Be willing to go to pick up your puppy where ever it is that you have decided to get them. A good breeder will not ship a puppy.
- Talk to your breeder about how many litters they have a year. Breeders breeding a lot of litters cannot possibly give the love, attention, training and socialization necessary to provide you with a puppy that is well rounded, healthy and happy.
- Be willing to wait for your puppy and make a reservation for one in advance. This way you and your breeder have lots of time to get you prepared with all that will be necessary to bring your bundle of fur joy home!
